It is best to swap out items that we use daily. Like an aged shirt with holes or an old toothbrush, certain things may need to be replaced for wear and tear – not to mention for hygiene reasons! This applies to CPAP masks and machines too; you might be attached to your current CPAP machine since it’s been with you since the start of your CPAP journey.

Did you know? New models are often designed from the suggestions of folks like you. As technology evolves, Many CPAP machine brands have followed suit. ResMed has introduced a variety of new inventions since the first release of the S8. One of these features is SmartStart™ which will start the machine by the user simply breathing in. The goal of SmartStart ™ was to ease you into therapy so that you can get used to breathing with your mask on. This feature was not available for the S8 but was released with the S9. Since then, ResMed has added new features every time a new CPAP release is announced.

Today we’ll be looking at ResMed’s S8 and S9 CPAP Machines and why we recommend our bestselling device*, ResMed AirSense 10™.

Top 3 upgrades from S8/S9 to AirSense 10™:

CPAP Machine Build

Standing at 1.25 kg, the AirSense 10™ with built-in humidifier is lighter than S8 and S9 models (with humidifiers attached)**. The S9 and AirSense 10™ come with both manual and automatic climate control. One benefit of automatic climate control is that it keeps your tube humid without rainouts. If the weather changes in the middle of the night, so will your CPAP humidifier adjust automatically to maintain the ideal temperature.

The AirSense 10™ is also compatible with ClimateLineAir ™ heated tubing. This tubing is designed to maintain the temperature of the humidified air; preventing a common CPAP problem, and rainout during CPAP therapy sessions.

CPAP Features

ResMed always strives to deliver the most comfortable CPAP therapy possible. As a result, the AirSense 10™ has an improved AutoSet ™ algorithm. The AutoSet ™ algorithm will adjust and analyse your breathing at the same time to deliver the ideal lowest therapy pressure needed to prevent airway obstructions.

With a decibel score of 26.6, The Airsense 10™ is as quiet as a whisper. Every ResMed CPAP machine is designed to be quiet to minimise nighttime disruptions for you and your bed partner.

There are also video guides on the Airsense 10™ on ResMed’s official YouTube channel. These video guides vary from how to best use the machine to mask fitting with the AirSense 10™.

Interface

The S8 and S9 interface is quite limited when compared to the AirSense 10™. The S8 menu is compact and easy to use but lacks a backlight, making it less legible at night. While the S9 has a similar user interface to the AirSense 10™, it lacks auto-dimming. Without this auto-dimming function, you must turn off the backlight and deal with one more thing before bed. Contrast that with falling asleep with your CPAP therapy, without needing to get up and adjust your light.

AirSense 10™ highlights

To summarise the comparison, the AirSense 10™ is designed to be a compact but powerful CPAP machine; besides being designed to be quieter than the S8/S9 machines. The AirSense 10™ includes several features designed to increase the comfort and efficiency of your sleep therapy. These include compatibility with ResMed’s latest comfort accessories, improved AutoSet™ algorithm, and a menu screen; not to mention free-to-use official video guides from ResMed.
